Team EVEREST 2019: Trek to Tengboche

Published Wednesday, 10th April 2019

Heavy rain, hailstones and snow fell during the night and it was a sleepless night for many as the effects of altitude kicked in.

Everyone was up for breakfast by 7am as they prepared to leave for their next destination by 8am.

It felt noticeably colder with a chill in the air so everyone layered up with warm clothing, however within a few minutes of setting off on the steep route out of Namche Bazaar the layers started coming off!

At 3440m (11286ft) the air is thinner and every step is more challenging After climbing for what seemed like an eternity the trail began to flatten out a little and the cold clouds lifted a little to reveal blue sky.

The team made their way deep down into the valley as a constant flow of yaks and mules passed them carrying their heavy loads up and down the mountain. The weather constantly changed as the trail took them through a beautiful pine forest and over the icy blue Khumbu river via swing bridges.

They stopped for lunch at the bottom of the valley then climbed almost a 1000m up a never-ending trail to Tengboche (3860m / 12664ft).

Heavy snow began to fall as they arrived and they were all glad to change out of their wet clothes and enjoy a cup of hot mint tea.
