Team Denali: Day 9 - Move to Camp 4!

Published Thursday, 14th June 2018

The team woke early on Day 9 and were greeted by blue skies and sunshine.

However, there were lots of very high clouds which meant strong winds higher up the mountain and it was touch and go as to whether the team would move from Camp 3.

In the end they decided to go for it and they prepared for the very long and tough day ahead of them.

Their packs and sledges were extremely heavy and progress was deliberately slow as they made their way towards Camp 4.

They were rewarded with some spectacular scenery and had a clear view of the route ahead until they reached Windy Corner, where the weather took a turn for the worse.

The temperature dropped significantly and the wind picked up just as they crossed a difficult avalanche-prone slope.

By this time everyone was feeling exhausted and the effects of altitude were kicking in now that they were above 4000 metres, where the air is considerably thinner.

Much to their delight Camp 4 appeared out of the mist and they were able to appreciate the breathtaking, yet slightly intimidating, views of the route ahead!

The temperature began to rise during the afternoon as they all pitched in to build their camp at 14,200 feet (4328m), fortifying their tents to protect them from the potential severe winds which have been forecast.

The team hope to drop back down tomorrow to recover their cache but if the weather forces them to remain in camp they will all welcome a well-earned rest!

Today Joe's little girl turned 7 and the whole team would like to wish Bethany a Very Happy Birthday!

It is vitally important for the team to be able to stay in touch with their loved ones during these extreme challenges and we can not stress the importance it has on their mental health and well-being to be able to call home whenever they feel the need.

The incredible Communications Package that Inmarsat provides not only allows the team to do this, but greatly enhances their safety, and enables 65 Degrees North to share every step of the journey via social media.

The team are undertaking this extreme challenge to raise funds for The Royal Marines Charity
