Team Denali: Day 3 & 4 - Base Camp to Camp 1

Published Tuesday, 12th June 2018

Team Denali took in some dramatic scenery during the 40-minute trip from Talkeetna to Base Camp. They flew over mountains that got bigger and bigger, and ever more remote.

The 6-seater planes landed on an airfield which was only about 50 metres wide and on a steep incline. Surrounded by cliffs and peaks that towered 7000 feet above Base Camp, this was definitely not a journey for the faint-hearted!

The team quickly established themselves at Base Camp and set up their tents just before the sun dropped behind a mountain. They prepared their food and settled in for their first night on Denali

Early the next day the team packed up and dragged all their kit in pulks and backpacks down on to the glacier before heading up towards Camp 1.

Crevasses make travel over the glacier extremely dangerous, so they travelled in two teams and were roped up to each other at all times. As the day warmed up there were also frequent and large avalanches from the peaks around them.

Reaching Camp 1 about 5 hours later they quickly established themselves to escape the full force of the sun, which was incredibly intense.

They had pasta and meat balls for dinner then settled down for their second night on the mountain.

Everyone was feeling good and in very high spirits!
