JOGLE: Nearing the Finish Line

Day 3 of the World Record attempt was particularly long and tough for double amputee, Michael Swain.

He was on the road by 6.30am, but the ridiculously long hours cycling with very little sleep started to take its toll on his body and Michael began to struggle.

A road closure near Tintern Abbey diverted the team, adding an extra 2 hours to their route which meant Michael needed to really dig deep to stay focussed.

The team rallied around him to keep his spirits high, and despite the pain, Michael pushed on through and kept going for a huge 22 hours!!

With just a couple of hours of snatched sleep, Michael was back on the road by 7.30am this morning heading for the finish line.

Michael was injured in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009 whilst serving for 3rd Battalion, The Rifles Regiment.

As a result of an improvised Explosive Device (IED) he lost both legs above the knee and was the first British Military amputee to be fitted with Osseointegration Prosthetic limbs.

Refusing to be defined by his injuries Michael has been keen to push the boundaries of what is possible on a hand bike, and show that it is possible to overcome adversity and achieve incredible things!
