Countdown to EVEREST 2019: An Evening Hosted by Inmarsat
Published Saturday, 16th March 2019With just 3 weeks remaining until the team board an aeroplane heading to Kathmandu final preparations are now underway!
Last week our Sponsor Inmarsat hosted an evening at their unique and contemporary Conference Centre in London where we were absolutely delighted to be joined by so many friends, Sponsors and Supporters.
It was the perfect opportunity for 65 Degrees North to thank all those who have contributed towards our projects, and continue to help us achieve successful outcomes for the wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women that participate in our challenging adventures.
Without the support of so many 'Rehabilitation through Adventure' simply would not be possible!
Barry Cox from Inmarsat gave a detailed presentation about the Comms Kit that they are providing, which will ensure the team will be able to share every step of the journey in real time, and more importantly will have a reliable means of contact with the support and medical teams at all time. The Communications Package will also ensure the team will be able to keep in contact with loved ones and read messages of support during down-time, which is vital for good mental health and well-being and will help keep their spirits high when times get tough.
65 Degrees North High Mountain Advisor, John Barry, gave a very detailed and informed account of what Team Everest can expect during their time on the World's highest mountain, and Patron Jonathan Thomson gave an interesting and funny account of the projects he runs, and why it is important for us to offer a diverse and inclusive range of activities to those who need encouragement and focus.
Team Everest member Joe Winch gave an incredibly moving account of his struggle with PTSD, the impact it has had on his and his family's life, and how taking on challenges with 65 Degrees North has a positive impact:
".... it was the mountains that I wanted to escape to – that is where I have always felt most comfortable. Yet since getting unwell, I had lacked both the confidence and the opportunity to do this safely – the obvious risk being that I might simply never return. That is why 65 Degrees North is so important, because they offer the chance to dramatically break out of the mundane, exhausting, and incredibly tedious routine of recovery, and instead they spectacularly propel our recoveries forward – rehabilitating through incredible life changing adventures.."
We can not thank Inmarsat's CEO Rupert Pearce enough for allowing us to spend time with those who have helped us achieve so much in such a spectacular and inviting environment, and we would like to thank everyone who made the effort to attend, especially Namgya Sherpa from Grand Himalaya Expedition who will accompany the team on Mt Everest.
The team are undertaking this extreme challenge to raise funds for The Royal Marines Charity
